Hearn: Boxing fans want Froch to fight Bernard Hopkins

hopkins8By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is saying that he’s getting bombarded on his Twitter account from boxing fans telling him to get his fighter WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch to agree to face 50-year-old former IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins this year.

Hearn says that he’s interested in making the Froch-Hopkins fight, but the number one fight that he and Froch want right now is against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, the 28-year-old son of boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.

Hearn and Froch are still convinced that a Froch-Chavez Jr fight is a marketable fight in Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States, even though Chavez Jr has only fought twice in the past three years since his one-sided loss to Sergio Martinez in 2012.

Both of Chavez Jr’s fights have come against middleweight journeyman Brian Vera rather than against any of the super middleweight contenders.

“It’s a big fight. Chavez is still the favorite we’d like to make,” Hearn said via IFL TV. “Hopkins would be a great fight we’d like to make. It wasn’t something we originally planned because he’s up at light heavyweight. He [Hopkins] can make super middleweight quite comfortably and he’d like to skip a weight. He wants to fight Froch, and now I’m getting bombarded on twitter saying ‘Tell Froch to wake-up and fight Bernard.’ I still think that’s a fight for the City Ground [in Nottingham] rather than Vegas. That’s something that appeals to Carl. HBO would love that fight. Sky would love the fight. So let’s see where it goes,” Hearn said.

As bad as the Chavez Jr-Froch match-up is, a fight between Froch and Hopkins is now looking like a great fight. I mean, I’m not really interested in seeing Froch fight Hopkins, because there are better fights out there for Froch. But with Froch lowering the bar in terms of the opposition he’s interested in fighting in going after a fight against Chavez Jr, then I see a fight between Froch and Hopkins being an interesting fight.

The fans want to see Froch fight Andre Ward, the Dirrell brothers, James DeGale and Gennady Golovkin, but that’s not going to happen. Since Froch is already getting royally dumped on by a lot of fans due to him being interested in facing Chavez Jr, a fighter who has done zero since getting dominated by Sergio Martinez three years ago, he might as well go ahead and fight Hopkins.

I see a fight between Hopkins and Froch as being much more interesting than Froch-Chavez Jr. To me, Chavez Jr reminds me more of a punching bag than a high quality fighter, and that’s going to make it easy for Froch. Chavez Jr’s long time out of the ring is obviously not going to help him against Froch.

It doesn’t matter that Chavez Jr is fighting a tune-up fight on April 18th against Andrzej Fonfara. The fact remains that Chavez Jr still has been an inactive fighter, and he’s still incredibly easy to hit. No matter what happens in the Fonfara bout, Chavez Jr will still never have fought a super middleweight before. Fonfara is an easy to hit light heavyweight with little hand speed.
