The Mayweather-Pacquiao winner will be decided by politics, says Holyfield

pac01236666By Chris Williams: While many boxing fans see the proposed May 2nd fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao being determined by who the better man is between the two, former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield has a different point of view about the fight.

Holyfield sees it coming down to whichever the boxing powers want the winner to be. If they want Mayweather to be the winner, then he’ll get the nod, or if they want it to be Pacquiao, then he’ll be given the decision. Holyfield sees it coming down to straight politics unfortunately, and that’s kind of disappointing.

“Boxing chooses who boxing wants to win,” Holyfield said via atlantablackstar.com [http://atlantablackstar.com/2015/01/12/evander-holyfield-says-corrupt-boxing-will-choose-wins-floyd-mayweather-manny-pacquiao-fight-happens/]. “That’s just how it is. If they want Floyd to win, he’ll win. If they want Manny to win, he’ll win. The game of boxing is one of those things where if they don’t want Mayweather to win they just won’t give it to him. He realizes that.”

A lot of boxing fans will agree with Holyfield on this, because they’ve seen fighters get victories again and again in cases where the other guy appeared to win. Just look at Pacquiao’s first three fights with Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao appeared to lose all three of the fights in the minds of many fans, yet Pacquiao was given two victories and a draw out of the fights.

Marquez finally got tired of it and decided to knock Pacquiao out cold so that the judges couldn’t take another victory away from him. Then you can look at Brandon Rios’ fights against Diego Chaves and Richard Abril. Rios should have arguably lost both fights, but he was given victories in both fights. It was really wacky stuff. It goes on and on unfortunately.

“He [Mayweather] recognizes that in boxing, people do what they want to do. And they just say, ‘You lost.’ They cheat people. Who hasn’t been cheated (in boxing)?” Holyfield said.

It would be a pity if the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight were tainted by a controversial decision by the judges, because it would taint the winner of the fight, and cause boxing fans to have no faith in the results. With a fight as big as that, it would be a huge black eye for the sport. However, I have a feeling that the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight will be so one-sided in Mayweather’s favor that even the judges couldn’t mess up the results.

Mayweather will be at 100% for this fight, and he won’t take it easy on Pacquiao like he did in his last two fights against Marcos Maidana. This means that we can expect Mayweather to clown Pacquiao for 12 rounds by making him miss and look bad.

Mayweather will be looking to pick Pacquiao off with shots all night long, and turning him into another Marquez, who Mayweather easily beat in 2009. Before that fight, boxing fans assumed that Marquez would give Mayweather a lot of troubles due to him having gotten the better of Pacquiao in his previous fights. However, Mayweather beat Marquez soundly and it was never competitive even for an instant.
