deontay7809By Scott Gilfoid: With a little over two weeks to go before his big fight against WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs), challenger Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) is very excited about the match and he can’t wait to get in the ring to test his power against the 6’2” Stiverne at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Some boxing fans feel that Stiverne, 36, will be able to take Deontay’s best right hand power shots without dropping for the 10 count. We won’t find out until Deontay and Stiverne get in the ring on January 17th on Showtime Championship Boxing.

One thing is for sure if Deontay fights on the outside the way that the 6’6” Ray Austin did in his fight against Stiverne in 2011, then it’s going to be awfully hard for Stiverne to be able to compete in this fight. Austin out-boxed Stiverne for 9 rounds until getting hit with a big shot while the two of them were in close.

It’s extremely doubtful that Stiverne will be able to last nine rounds against a puncher like Deontay, because he has true one-punch power, and if he can land 10-15 big bombs in each round then there’s little chance that Stiverne will be still standing by the 9th round.

If Stiverne is still around, he’s going to be pretty beaten up and in no position to try and win the fight.

“2 week 2 days, ummmm yeah, I’m just excited. #BombZquadReady #AndTheNew,” Deontay said on his twitter.

This is a fight that will lead to other important bouts in the heavyweight division. If Deontay can win this fight then it’ll open it up for him to face some other interesting heavyweights like Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury. Those fights are for starters. Deontay can also get some other big fights like David Haye and Alexander Povetkin. There’s really no limit to the big fights that will be available to Deontay if he can get past the hard hitting Stiverne.

This fight against is going to be the proving ground for Deontay Wilder. The critics like to dig up an old amateur fight of Deontay’s where he was stopped to try and show that he doesn’t have a great chin.

You have to remember that Deontay only had a very small amount of fights in the amateurs, so it’s not that surprising that he lost some of them. But Deontay has improved dramatically since he turned pro, and he’s not the same fighter who was stopped in the amateur ranks many years ago.
