Kell Brook weathers the Porter storm

brook877By Yannis Mihanos: As I witnessing Kell “The Special K” Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) for the first time in beating IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-1-1, 15 KOs) last Saturday night, I must say that he did convince me. His performance was not outstanding but it was rock solid.

Anybody else would have fallen after the ferocious attacks of Porter starting from round 1 up to round 12, but no, not this one, not this guy.

At the beginning I was a bit sceptic with what I would see from Brook cause many times fighters who come with clean sheet records are not in reality what they seem to be (paper champs). That was clearly not the case here. The lad from Sheffield England was well trained and determined and win.

Porter (24Wins – 1 Loss) on the other hand experienced his first defeat but not in a very disappointing way. He did fight like he usually does: The Porter way.

Porter fights like a wild animal in the ring and at times he does resemble Mike Tyson at his best, not so much because of his raw strength or extreme knock out power but because of his way of coming forwards and attacking to his opponents.

Even in defeat Porter showed to me that he has the ingredients to continue to be a hot name in the welterweight division ,there is no doubt in my mind about it at all, but he must take a few notes with his father and trainer Kenny Porter and work even harder.

There is no shame in losing if you have tried your best.

So what was the deciding factor in this match? What was this that convinced the judges (except from the English who decided to stay neutral)?

Brook’s height advantage (5 ft 9 in -1.75m) was the deciding factor in this match. Brook’s better reach allowed him to dictate the punches that were coming and going. Brook throughout the match stunned Porter with nice clean and effective shots, while Porter was trying with any way possible to attack (pushing, even head-butting at times) but with not enough success.

Team Brook had definitely done its homework well. Brook was a master in the ring and that convinced the judges but also the public who was watching.

After the match Porter demanded a rematch, I think that won’t happen anytime soon because like it happened with Marcos Maidana after the fight against Adrien Broner, Brook has also in his sights a fight with the number 1 pound for pound in boxing Floyd “Money” Mayweather J.

All he has to do is stay unbeaten until May with maybe one more good victory in his hands and that can make him a very good candidate, much better than his other compatriot Amir Khan.
