Thurman wants Khan, Collazo, Mayweather or Maidana next

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA interim welterweight champion Keith Thurman (23-0, 21 KO’s) will be at tonight’s Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada to scout out the fighters in the two main fights between Mayweather and Maidana and Amir Khan and Luis Collazo. Thurman says he’s willing to any of those four fighters next, whether they win or loss, according to the sweetscience. Thurman doesn’t care in what condition he gets them; he just wants a fight against one of them.

Thurman’s chances of a Mayweather fight are probably not too good right now given that he’s still not bringing in good ratings for his fights on Showtime. But Thurman might be able to get a fight against the loser of the Khan-Collazo fight, if it’s Collazo who ends up losing. Khan likely would never agree to fight Thurman due to his big power, and his ability to box. Thurman would be a nightmare opponent for Khan, and I can’t see Golden Boy Promotions, or Khan’s adviser Al Haymon agreeing to a fight between him and Thurman. It doesn’t matter that Haymon is also Thurman’s adviser, I still don’t see him agreeing to let Khan take a fight against Thurman. There’s too much danger involved for Khan in a fight against Thurman.

Thurman would like to face IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter next, but Porter has a mandatory title defense coming up against his #1 IBF contender Kell Brook in July, so he’s not going to be available to fight Thurman until he gets past Brook, and that’s if he does. If Brook wins, then he’ll be the one who will need to make a decision whether he wants to fight Thurman or not. Brook wouldn’t have to fight Thurman, and I can’t see him volunteering for that fight ever.

More than likely, Thurman will end up with either Collazo next if he loses to Khan or another fringe contender along the same lines of the guys he’s been facing lately. Marcos Maidana won’t fight Thurman if he loses to Mayweather tonight because there won’t be any money in that fight, and Maidana would be the bigger name.
