Lee Selby vs. Romulo Koasicha on May 17th on Cleverly-Corbin card

By Scott Gilfoid: #4 WBC Lee Selby (18-1, 7 KO’s) will be fighting 23-year-old 2nd tier fighter Romulo Koasicha (21-3, 12 KO’s) on May 17th for the WBC International featherweight title at the Motorpoint Arena, in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. For the 27-year-old Selby, this is another mismatch that his promoter Eddie Hearn is setting him up with, and it’s kind of interesting that Hearn still isn’t ready to put Selby in against his first quality opponent after 6 years in the pro game.

The Selby-Koasicha fight will be on the same card as former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly’s cruiserweight debut against someone named Sean Corbin.

Hearn wants to set Selby up for a world title shot against WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez, but I think Selby is going to be in shock when/if that fight ever happens due to how much better Gonzalez is than the fodder that Hearn has been feeding Selby.

Koasicha is basically an unknown as far as casual boxing fans go. He was beaten last year by Jesus Galicia (10-6) by a 12 round majority decision. Koasicha also has defeats against Isaac Torres and Luis Manuel Cabrera (4-3).

It’s tough to see Selby going anywhere in the featherweight division with the weak match-making that Hearn is doing for him, because he should have been cutting his teeth on 1st tier opposition a long time and ago and here he is still fighting weak opponents. Koasicha is more like a 3rd tier opponent than a 2nd tier guy, and I see him as a clear step down from Selby’s last opponent Rendall Munroe. Hearn might as well drag Munroe back out into the ring for Selby rather than having him fight Koasicha.

Besides the Cleverly-Corbin fight, the undercard also has Gary Buckland vs. Gavin Rees in lightweight action, super middleweight prospect Callum Smith facing Tobias Webb in a 10 round fight, and Chris Jenkins vs. Miguel Aguilar in light welterweight champion.
