Trout: Lara will confuse and outbox Canelo, and maybe get robbed

canelo88By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout sees Cuban Erislandy Lara (19-1-2) dominating Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) in their fight on July 12th, but then possibly getting robbed by the judges rather than getting the victory. Trout feels that Lara will beat Canelo the same way that Floyd Mayweather Jr. did in defeating him last September, but Trout still doubts whether Lara will be giving the victory over the much, much more popular 23-year-old Canelo.

The Canelo-Lara fight will be a non-title fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, as Canelo doesn’t want to fight for Lara’s WBA junior middleweight title. The title that Canelo wants is Mayweather’s WBA Super World junior middleweight title. That’s the WBA’s No.1 title at 154, and Canelo wants it. Unfortunately, he may not get it if Lara beats him the way that Mayweather did.

“I think Lara’a going to take it,” Trout said via thaboxingvoice. “[He’s going to] outbox him, confuse him, but will they give it to him is the question. So I’m going with Lara on this one. Unanimous. If they give me that rematch, I’ll take it in a heartbeat.”

Trout was easily beaten by Lara last December by a 12 round unanimous decision in losing by the scores of 118-109, 117-110 and 117-110. The fight was totally one-sided with Trout getting knocked down once. In Trout’s fight against Canelo last year, Trout had Canelo against the ropes the last 8 rounds of the fight, and badly out-worked him. However, the judges gave the win to Canelo by the scores 115-112, 118-109, and 116-111. The fight was pretty close to being a draw, and the judges’ scores of 118-109 and 116-111 were laughable given how close the fight was. Those scores seemed to be backwards.

It’s going to make Canelo look really bad if the judges give him the decision win over Lara if it appears that he loses the fight. Canelo is a huge star, and that obviously is going to help him if the fight is somewhat close, but if Lara really dominates him the way that Trout thinks he will, it’s going to make 2 to 3 of the judges look bad if they give Canelo the victory. Hopefully, we don’t see any controversy in the Canelo-Lara fight because the last thing Canelo needs is a tainted win or a victory with the lopsided scores that we saw in his win over Trout. Those scores were way too high for the fight that took place in the ring that night.
