Khan lectures Mayweather for keeping him waiting

khan927By Scott Gilfoid: In official statement sent from Amir Khan moments ago, he complained that he had signed a contract to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. last December, which was why he chose to wait around and decline a fight against Devon Alexander.

Khan went onto say that he’s upset that Mayweather didn’t communicate with him about why he was taking his time in making his choice for his May 3rd fight. Khan would have preferred that Mayweather show him the courtesy of letting him know what’s going on with his decision making.

Khan said “I am, however, very disappointed with Floyd and his team for not providing any explanation as to why he delayed the announcement for so long and ultimately avoided the fight with me. Clarification, if he was not fighting me, would have allowed me to look over my options and pursue another path, rather than the ultimate delay to my career this has caused…I was strongly advised to not take this fight[against Alexander] as I would be facing Floyd this May – and therefore signed my side of the contract.”

Khan makes a good argument about Mayweather having contacted him and let him know what’s happening, but if the shoe was on the other foot and Khan was dealing with a fighter that wasn’t on his level, would he have made the effort to have Golden Boy Promotions contact that fighter to let him know why he was delaying his decision? I would hope that Khan would practice what he preaches, but somehow I have my doubts. I know Khan said he had bigger and better things to do then to give Marcos Maidana a rematch when he asked him for a rematch recently.

Maidana’s idea at the time was for the two of them to fight each other and then winner would face Mayweather. Just imagine if Khan had said yes to that, then he’d be in a situation where he’d have a good opponent to earn a fight with Mayweather. Besides Maidana, Khan never gave Paul McCloskey a rematch after he asked for one to clear up their fight that took place in 2011 that ended on a head-butt. Khan never gave Marco Antonio Barrera a rematch after their fight ended on a cut caused by a clash of heads.

As the saying goes, ‘it is what it is.’ Khan would have liked for Mayweather to be on the hotline telling him what was happening with his decision making, but that’s not the way Mayweather ticks and he doesn’t need to be communicating with fighters 24/7 who aren’t on the same level as him or who don’t bring a lot to the table like his last opponent Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Believe me, if this was Canelo that Mayweather was dealing with, he’d have likely had Leonard Ellberbe in constant contact letting his management know what was happening. But with Khan, it wasn’t as imperative because he’s never proven to be a huge draw in the United States.

Khan says he has several opponents he’s looking at for his next fight. He’s not saying who they are but he recently mentioned Adrien Broner, Lamont Peterson and Shawn Porter as guys he wouldn’t mind facing.
