Froch and Groves agree to rematch in May

groves888By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch and George Groves have reportedly both agreed in a rematch that will take place in May in a large football stadium, according to the Daily Mail. Froch wants the fight to be staged in his home city in Nottingham at the City Ground, but Groves doesn’t want to fight there. He prefers that the fight be staged at Stamford Bridge. Froch will likely get his way given that he’s the two belt champion at the moment.

Groves recently won an appeal to the IBF to force Froch to give him a rematch. Winning the appeal actually worked against Groves in terms of him getting a good purse split, because the IBF ruled that Groves be given the minimum purse split of 15 percent due to him having a ranking below #1. Groves wasn’t happy with that, as he wanted a 25% purse split like normal fighters get when they’re the mandatory challenger.

There’s no word as of yet at what percentage Groves’ purse split will be, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were more than 15%. Without him, Froch wouldn’t have a big fight in the UK, because there’s really no one left for him to fight after Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew both got whipped. I suppose James DeGale is an option for Froch, but DeGale hasn’t been fighting quality opposition, and he’s taking things way too slowly with career.

Before the IBF ordered Froch to face Groves in a rematch, Froch had been talking about wanting to fight former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, that fight wouldn’t have made nearly the same kind of money that a Groves rematch would make Froch. With his huge purse split of either 85-15 or 75-25, Froch stands to make big money in fighting Groves. The pot is rumored to be 10 million pounds that will be split between the two fighters with Froch hogging most of it due to him being the champion.
