fury5656By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (12-0, 7 KO’s) will be facing journeyman Matt Greer (16-11, 13 KO’s) on February 15th at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. The fight is scheduled for 8 rounds on the undercard of the Dereck Chisora vs. Kevin Johnson card. Fury’s cousin Tyson Fury will be on the same card in a bout against journeyman Gonzalo Omar Basile.

Greer has been in the ring recently with Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr. He was destroyed early by both guys, but he at least made it to the 2nd round against Deontay. Ruiz Jr. was able to take him out in the 1st round. It’ll be interesting to see how far Greer can make it with Hughie, because he’s not known for being much of a puncher.

Most of Greer’s defeats come by stoppages; so if Hughie is taken the full 8-round distance with Greer, it would be a real negative sign for the young Hughie. I mean, this is a guy that Hughie absolutely has to take out at some point in the fight, preferably early.

If Hughie can’t stop Greer, then you would have to worry about Hughie’s future in the heavyweight division. He’s still young at 19, but he’s not likely to get much more power as he gets older. The problem with not being able to stop a journeyman like Greer is that it means Hughie will be forced to fight a lot of rounds during his career against guys that have excellent power. If Hughie isn’t stopping people, it increases the chance that he’ll be getting knocked out himself because he’ll be forced to go the duration against big sluggers. Just picture Hughie having to go 12 rounds with someone like Deontay Wilder bouncing right hands off of his chin the entire way. It won’t be good for Hughie.

In his last fight, Hughie suffered a cut over his right eye in stopping David Gegeshidze in the 4th round. Before the stoppage, the fight was surprisingly competitive with Fury taking a lot of hard shots to the head by Gegeshidze. Hughie should have gotten this guy out of there straightaway, but instead the fight dragged on into the 4th round before Hughie finally was able to get to Gegeshidze and stop him. But before stopping him, Hughie’s right eye swelled up and he ended up suffering a cut.
