mundine53By Allan Fox: Former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (45-5, 27 KO’s) has a stay busy fight on Wednesday night against little known Gunnar Jackson (18-4-3, 6 KO’s) at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Boondall, Queensland, Australia. Mundine, 38, wants to get a fight against WBA interim light middleweight champion Erislandy Lara, but a fight like that isn’t easy to come by right now. It’s possible that Mundine can make that fight at some point in 2014.

Jackson, 27, has losses to Adrian Taihia and Dimitri Simoukov in New Zealand. He’s won his last three fights since his defeat to Taihia. However, his opposition has been very poor.

Mundine is coming off of a 7th round TKO win over Shane Mosley last November. That was kind of a stay busy fight for Mundine as well, because he was much bigger and stronger than the 42-year-old Mosley. It wasn’t much of a fight due to the size differences between the two fighters.

Mundine fought for a world title last year against former IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale, but he ended up on the short end of the stick in losing by a 12 round unanimous decision. The scores were fairly wide with Geale winning by a 117-111, 117-111, 116-112. However, the fight was a lot closer than the scores given, and it Mundine had just been a little bit busier then he would have won the fight.

Mundine would be much better off if he fought more recognizable opposition when he was fighting tune-ups. Guys like Jackson and Garth Wood really don’t register with boxing fans from the United States. Mundine would help himself if he fought guys like Willie Nelson, Austin Trout, John Jackson, Jermall Charlo, James Kirkland, Glen Tapia and Vanes Martirosyan to stay busy. Wins over those guys would get Mundine pushed up quickly in the rankings and show boxing fans that he’s serious about wanting to fight for a world title.
