stevens22By Allan Fox: Middleweight contender Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18 KO’s) is under consideration for WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s next bout in November.

Although Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 isn’t saying that Stevens will be the guy that will be facing Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) in November, he did come away impressed with what he saw from Stevens in his 1st round knockout win over Saul Roman last Saturday at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Loeffler said to RingTV “I think Stevens did what he needed to do to put himself in a position for a title fight…I would just say that he had an impressive performance. Golovkin has always said he would fight anyone in the middleweight division, and that would include Stevens.”

Stevens wants the fight against Golovkin, and K2 needs a credible opponent for Golovkin to fight because he’s been blowing through his opposition too quickly without the fights being entertaining.

Golovkin’s last opponent Matthew Macklin was supposed to have been someone that would make a fight of it last June, Macklin quickly folded in the 3rd round after getting hit hard with a left to the body.

Stevens has the power to give Golovkin problems if he’s able to land one of his big shots. It wouldn’t be at all surprising if Loeffler thinks twice about taking this fight and instead chooses to face an easier opponent that won’t be a threat to Gennady.

Stevens, 5’7”, isn’t very big, and we’ve seen him get out-boxed in losses to Andre Dirrell and Jesse Brinkley, but his big power makes up for his lack of size.

If Golovkin decides to punch with Stevens instead of boxing him the way that Dirrell did, we could see Stevens pull off an upset by stopping Golovkin. Stevens’ power is good enough for him to take Golovkin out early before he has a change to warm up and get his own offense started.
