Khan-Alexander: Will Golden Boy cut their ties with Amir if he loses?

khan53By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions had high hopes for Amir Khan when they signed him to a contract with the promotional company. The idea was for him to continue to win fights and impressive fans with his exciting bouts.

Unfortunately for Golden Boy, Khan has suffered losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, and struggled to beat a past his best Julio Diaz in the past two years and things are looking rather bleak for Khan and Golden Boy right now.

Golden Boy now has plans for Khan to fight IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander in December and if Khan gets the win then he’d be facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2014.

However, if Khan gets beaten up and/or stopped by Alexander than he can forget all about a fight with Mayweather because there’s no way that Golden Boy could bring Khan back quick enough to get a fight with Mayweather in the short amount of time that he has left in his contract with Showtime/CBS. I mean, a loss for Khan against Alexander would be Khan’s 3rd loss in his last 5 fights and that’s journeyman type stuff.

If Golden Boy tried to match Khan against Mayweather in a pay per view fight under those circumstances I think it would result in very, very low PPV numbers unless the boxing public was totally clueless about Khan’s recent losses.

I kind of think the casual boxing fans probably wouldn’t know, but enough hardcore boxing fans would know to steer away from a Khan-Mayweather fight if that were the situation.

I think Alexander is big trouble for Khan at this point in Khan’s career. Khan seems to be getting worse since his loss to Danny Garcia, and we saw that with how a light puncher like Julio Diaz was able to put Khan down on the canvas last April.

Alexander is a lot better than Julio Diaz, and I can’t see Khan winning that fight or even come close to winning it. I suspect Khan will do well for a couple of rounds until Alexander catches him on the chin with a big shots, but once that happens it’s going to be all over for Khan.

What’s going to be interesting to see what Golden Boy does with Khan at that point. If they choose to keep promoting him then they’re going to have to match him really softly to the extreme with light hitters to make sure that he doesn’t get knocked out again. We’re talking Golden Boy combing the lightweight division for more light hitting Carlos Molina types.
