Prediction: Trout by shutout decision over Canelo

canelo00By Dan Ambrose: This Saturday night we’re going to see Golden Boy Promotions “Golden Goose” WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) plucked clean by WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) in what I see as a lopsided shutout 12 round decision for the 27-year-old Trout at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

This is going to be the second schooling that we’ve seen in consecutive weeks. Last Saturday night we saw Guillermo Rigondeaux nearly pitch a shutout over HBO darling Nonito Donaire in New York, and now we’re about to see Golden Boy’s #1 fighter Canelo get completed plucked by Trout to where the Golden Goose, as Trout calls him, is stopped from laying the golden eggs temporarily.

I don’t see a loss for Canelo as stopping him from being an eventual pay per view star for Golden Boy and HBO, but I do think it’s going to stop him for at least another year or two until the boxing public forgets his loss to Trout.

Knowing Golden Boy, they’ll put Canelo back on a nice soft diet of 140 to 147 pounders for him to continue to pad his record until eventually making the move to have the boxing public pay to see his future fights.

They obviously won’t be putting Canelo back in with Trout after next Saturday because the way that Trout is going to dominate Canelo will make it so that Golden Boy will never take that risk again of putting him in with the slick southpaw Trout.

Trout has the size and speed advantage over Canelo. It’s not as pronounced as it was last December when the 5’10” towered over the 5’7” Miguel Cotto, but it’s still a good size and reach advantage for Trout in this fight. He’s definitely bigger than Canelo and you can see that even when they’re not standing eye to eye facing each other.

Canelo is going to try and work himself in position to where he can land his body shots. However, Trout isn’t going to let him because he’s going to keep moving and forcing the flat-footed Canelo to move around the ring and not plant his feet.

The thing with Canelo is he’s not a big puncher unless he’s got his feet firmly planted on the ground. Like fellow Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Canelo can’t generate any power when he’s forced to punch on the move and that’s going to really hurt him in this fight because Trout isn’t one of those old timer type of fighters from the stone age that just stands there looking to trade in close. He’s a modern fighter and he’s going to give Canelo fits in this fight and make him look like a 22-year-old novice instead of a major belt holder.
