abregu43By Chris Williams: Bob Arum of Top Rank has reportedly signed #1 WBC, #8 WBA welterweight contender Luis Carlos Abregu (34-1, 28 KO’s) to his stable. Adding the 29-year-old Abregu to his stable, Arum now has another fighter to go with his other welterweights in Manny Pacquiao, Tim Bradley, Jessie Vargas and Ruslan Provodnikov.

Arum also has light welterweights Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado that can also fight at 147 to join in with the round table fights.

Abregu has limited experience against quality opposition during his eight-year pro career. His best opponents up to this point in his career are Tim Bradley, who easily beat him, and the highly hyped Thomas Dulorme. Abregu easily beat Dulorme by a 7th round TKO last October.

Abregu will be fighting Antonin Decarie (27-1, 8 KO’s) for the vacant WBC Silver welterweight title on April 27th on the undercard of the Sergio Martinez vs. Martin Murray fight at the Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina. Abregu is ranked high enough to be in the thick of things for a shot at WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

It’s doubtful that Abegu will ever get that fight even if he becomes the mandatory challenger because Mayweather will just wait him out or vacate the title if he’s absolutely forced to take the fight because he’s likely not going to willingly fight a Top Rank fighter.

Abegu is a good fighter, but he doesn’t match up well at all against other Golden Boy fighters like Adrien Broner or Robert Guerrero. He’d likely have to fight Guerrero or maybe Broner to get a shot at the WBC title and he’d never beat one of those guys because they have too much skills for this slugger.

Adding Abregu to his stable will add another body for Arum to put in with his round table in house fights. Arum can keep Rios, Alvarado, Vargas, Bradley, Pacquiao, Abregu and Provodnikov fighting each other for at least a couple of years before he’s going to need to add another body for new blood.

Ideally, it would be better if Arum matched these guys against Golden Boy’s best fighters because it’s going to get boring after a while with them mainly fighting each other but that’s probably not going to happen unless Top Rank and Golden Boy and start working with each other.
