zaumudio1By Jim Dower: In a mismatch that should have never taken place in the first place, Javier Fortuna (22-0, 16 KO’s) stayed unbeaten with an easy 1st round knockout win over #15 WBA fringe contender Miguel Zamudio (25-2-1, 13 KO’s) on Friday night in a fight that was televised by ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Fortuna came out on fire and flurried on Zamudio until dropping him with a left hook to the head. Zamudio got back to his feet and continued to eat punches until getting dropped with another big left hook to the head.

This time he failed to get up immediately and the fight was halted at 1:08 of the round by referee Eddie Cotton.

Fortuna lost his interim WBA World featherweight title after failing to make weight on Thursday’s weigh-in.
Although the 23-year-old Fortuna won the fight, he showed poor form and was getting hit as he flurried on Zamudio. Had this been a good fighter with a chin and power, Fortuna would have been knocked out himself.

He’s going to have to change his fighting style because rushing his opponents early in his fights isn’t going to work against the better fighters in the division.

Fortuna has been getting away with it up until now because his opposition has been so poor that they couldn’t do anything about it, but there are a lot of fighters like Mikey Garcia, Daniel Ponce De Leon, and Abner Mares that would knock Fortuna out if he fought like that against them.

In another mismatch on the card, junior middleweight John Jackson (16-1, 14 KO’s), the son of former knockout artist Julian Jackson, defeated Carresso Fort (16-1-1, 11 KO’s) by an eight round unanimous decision. The scores were 79-73, 79-73 and 77-75.

The fight wasn’t close at all and the referee that scored it 77-75 must have been watching another fight because it was totally one-sided.

Other boxing results on the card:

Emmanuel Lartei Lartey UD 6 Jonathan Batista
