Rigondeaux decisions Donaire

donaire1113By James Sexton: Firstly, I would like to say I thoroughly enjoyed watching Nonito Donaire vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux fight tonight in which Rigondeaux defeated Donaire by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York. I believe the judges were a little off as I had the fight more in Rigo’s favor. However, the result was a unanimous decision for Rigondeaux and that’s exactly what it should have been. I am pleased that Rigondeaux won so decisively that he could not be cheated.

After doing a little after match reading I have heard that Donaire ‘could not do anything’ as Rigo was ‘running’ it reminded me a lot about what I heard from anti-mayweather fans earlier in his career as he would use footwork and quick, precise punching to win rounds rather than stand and exchange with his opponents.

I enjoy watching wars as much as any boxing fan, but tonight’s match in my eyes was just as entertaining as a Rios-Alvarado or Bradley-Provodnikov match-up. Rigondeaux used movement effectively to neutralize Nonito’s offense and aside from the tenth round knockdown, did this consistently for twelve rounds straight. Hopefully this dispels the rumor that Rigo can only fight effectively for four rounds.

The reason I predicted a win for Rigondeaux in the firstly place was based on the fact he could out maneuver Nonito in a major way if things went right on the night and although he didn’t get the TKO I predicted, the result was still a win. I don’t expect there to be a rematch although if there is, the result will likely be the same unless Nonito can land one of the big punches he was attempting though the night.

Personally I would rather see Rigondeaux take on another big name in the division or even take a stay busy fight as I love to watch him in the ring, regardless of the opponent.
