By Stevie Ocallaghan: David “Niño” Rodriguez, the 35 year old heavyweight from El Paso, Texas is hoping to get back in the ring soon after being out of action for 16 months.

David was at a pizza parlor with friends on the 29/12/11 and was jumped by 6 men, stabbed and they tried to cut his throat. David was seriously injured but thankfully is back to full fitness and a Fit David Rodriguez is someone who can’t be overlooked.

With a record of 36 wins, 34 KOs, 24 first round knockouts and no defeats, Rodriguez was in the frame for a title eliminator until the mugging. As I said he is back to full fitness but at 35 time is not completely on his side and there will be some ring rust, but you never lose the power.

A tremendous body puncher with a big left hook, Rodriguez could be a factor. Similar to another fighter in Deontay Wilder, they both have faced limited opposition but again they both have won every fight.

His toughest fight was arguably against Argentinian Manuel Pucheta who was 23-3 at the time for the NABA Heavyweight title and stopped him in the 7th. He also knocked out Owen Beck about a year or so before Wilder fought him, knocking him out cleanly out in the 3rd, something Wilder didn’t do. Beck retired on his stool and didn’t come out for the 4th against Wilder.

A fit and healthy Rodriguez will be a welcome addition to the heavyweight division and with the punching power he possesses and must be given a chance
