Robert Guerrero: Don’t underestimate him

guerrero562By Bill Mitchell: With the upcoming super fight on May 4th between Floyd Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO’s), and Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs), there are fans who see challenger Robert Guerrero as a fighter that Floyd will walk over. An opponent who’s really a light welter weight who lacks solid punching power.

A guy who pushes his opponent to the ropes and uses his head as a weapon. The consensus is Floyd is smarter than him and will take him out. One thing’s for certain. You can bet the referee’s going to play an important role in this fight.

While I’m personally in awe of Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Guerrero has no intentions of going into this fight as the sacrificial lamb. Under closer examination, you will see that Robert’s forged a legacy of his own and is a champion in his own rite. Let’s take a closer look at what Guerrero’s done in the sport of boxing. First, he’s only the third fighter in boxing history to win a world title at featherweight and welterweight.

Previously, this had only been accomplished by the legendary Henry Armstrong and future hall of famer Manny Pacquaio. Roberts part of an elite class of fighters. Guerrero and Oscar De La Hoya are the only Mexican American fighters to win world titles in four divisions. Guerrero’s defeated five Olympians in a row. He readily handled and beat the tough Selkuk Aydin two fights ago. And his war with Andre Berto is a candidate for fight of the year. It’s no wonder Floyd said he is taking Robert very seriously and went as far as to include a rematch clause in his contract. That’s just smart business on Floyd’s part.

On the other side of the coin, Floyd is wanting to make a statement. He’s beginning a new contract with Showtime/CBS and It’s the individual richest contract in sport’s history. Again, it’s unprecedented in boxing. There’s nothing that motivates “Money” more than money. The only thing that stands between Floyd and his money is Robert Guerrero and his subsequent 5 fight. You can depend on the best possible Floyd Mayweather, Jr. showing up to convincingly destroy Mr. Guerrero.

I’m looking forward to the prefight buildup on Showtime that would be similar to the 24/7 series on HBO. We’ve all heard Robert’s comments about Floyd’s slowing down. But let’s see what happens to Robert when Floyd starts getting into his head. I believe Floyd will create some intrigue and fireworks when he gets into the ring on May 4th Should the fight go the distance, I shudder to think what the judging will be like in Las Vegas . If I were Guerrero, I wouldn’t depend on a close decision going my way. If Guerrero wins it must be clear and decisive.

With all that being said, this fight is going to be huge PPV extravaganza and a treat for boxing fans the world over. If you don’t think this fight is exciting then you’re probably not a true boxing aficionado or don’t care for the combatants. Please comment below and give me your thoughts on how you see this fight breaking down. I read all the comments and appreciate any positive input.
