By Dan Ambrose: A fight between light middleweights Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KO’s) and Delvin Rodriguez (27-6-3, 15 KO’s) is possible for May sometime on ESPN2, according to Dan Rafael. The fight is discussed, he says.
This is a good fight because both Rosado and Rodriguez are decent fringe level junior middleweight contenders. Neither is good enough to hold down an actual world title right now, but they’re both good gatekeeper type fighters.
Rosado, 27, recently moved up to middleweight to challenger WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin last January and was taken out in the 7th round in a mostly one-sided fight from start to the bloody finish. Rosado only really put out any effort in the 5th round when he landed some nice shots that puffed up Golovkin’s eyes.
However, Rosado’s success was short lived because in the 6th round, Golovkin started throwing more heat to pay Rosado back, and he almost staggered him with a right uppercut. That was pretty much the end of the fight because the bleeding Rosado ran for the remainder of the fight until it was stopped in the next round.
Rodriguez, 32, stopped previously unbeaten George Tahdooahnippah in the 6th round last month in an impressive performance. Rodriguez’s previous fight was a one-sided 12 round decision loss to WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout last year in June.
However, Rodriguez looked a lot better against the limited Tahdooahnippah, and was able to work him over with power shots. It was a fight between fighters in different class levels. Rodriguez was simply way better.
Rodriguez should be able to stop Rosado. He’s got the better skills, and he’s faced the superior competition during his career. Rosado is more fringe level compared to Rodriguez, who can actually fight a little bit when he’s not going up against someone really good. Rosado breaks down when he’s met with someone that can handle his power and give it back to him. Rodriguez is one of those types of fighters that can give Rosado fits.
