Cook: Ricky Burns can’t beat Adrien Broner

broner46By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO super featherweight champion Nicky Cook believes WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) doesn’t have the talent to beat WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) right now, and if that fight comes off in the future, which is a possibility unless Burns chooses not to take it yet again, then Broner will beat him, Cook thinks.

Cook said to thesun.co.uk “I hate to say it, and I really hope he doesn’t get the hump over this, but I can’t see Ricky beating Broner…he’s definitely a bit like Floyd Mayweather in that respect.”

Burns may be saved from a fight against Broner if he can’t get past his next test IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) on March 16th at the Wembley Arena in London, United Kingdom. This is a real toss up fight because Vazquez probably will clown Burns and make him look bad.

The only way I see Burns winning the fight is if he is able to win a close decision and maybe rough Vazquez up without the referee lifting a finger to police the fight to make sure that it’s a boxing match and not an MMA/boxing hybrid fight.

I’m really hoping the referee does a good job because it would be a pity of we see one fighter playing within the proper rules and the other using tricks that aren’t in the rule books.

As far as Broner vs. Burns goes, this is a mismatch plain and simple. Broner wants the fight because Burns is one of the few remaining fighters that he has left to fight at 135. Floyd Mayweather Jr. wants Broner to clean up the lightweight division before he moves up, so that leaves the Burns-Vazquez and Richard Abril vs. Sharif Bogere winners as the only two guys left for Broner to fight.

Broner basically has two fights left at 135 before he moves up, but he may choose to bail after he faces Burns. If that fights not available, Broner may move straight up to 140 because there’s not much to be gained from facing Vazquez, Bogere or Abril. There’s no money in those fights for Broner because those obscure fighters.
