Canelo-Trout looking good for May 4th, says Schaefer

alvarez2By Dan Ambrose: The fight proposed unification fight between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBC junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) is “looking good”, according to Steve Kim.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s made progress in the negotiations between Canelo and Trout, and Canelo is the one that’s driving the process by pushing Golden Boy Promotions to make the fight happen.

That’s to be expected because Schaefer hasn’t been high on the idea of pitting the young 22-year-old Canelo with Trout ever since he saw how Trout BADLY schooled Miguel Cotto last December. Canelo is in a position where he has to take the fight with Trout if he doesn’t want to take heavy heat from boxing fans for ducking him.

Schaefer obviously can see a scenario where Trout does the same thing with Canelo, and ends up plucking Golden Boy’s “Golden Goose” before he starts laying the golden eggs in PPV bouts.

Canelo is young and talented enough to where he’ll still likely bring gold for Golden Boy promotions even if Trout does beat him, but it’s going to be a setback for Canelo and Golden Boy no doubt. As long as Trout doesn’t give Canelo a career-changing beating, Canelo should be able to come back from a loss.

If Trout does beat Canelo, it’ll be by out-boxing him, and making him look like the flat-footed fighter that he’s been in his other fights. Trout does well against simple flat-footed fighters like Canelo, and it’s going to be tough for Canelo to win this fight because Trout is a more advanced fighter with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. type of fighting style in some ways.

Canelo has a more of a fighting style that guys from the 50s used. It works well against fighters that can’t move much, but against a fighter with advanced skills like Trout, it’s going to be awfully tough for Canelo to win this fight unless Trout foolishly decides to stand and trade with him at close quarters.
