pac89By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao says he would have gotten up after being knocked down by Juan Manuel Marquez in the 6th and continued to fight if he could have, but Pacquiao fears that he would ended up even more hurt.

Pacquiao said to the Manila Bulletin at mb.com.ph “If I had the strength to get up at the time, I would have fought back with Marquez and I would probably have received more punches. The result would have been more devastating.”

Yes, the result would have been much worse than it was, but I don’t really know how you can top what happened to Pacquiao. When you get knocked out cold, the way you can get hurt worse if you get put in a coma and end up with all kinds of problems. Pacquiao would have been knocked out had he been able to get up from the 6th round knockout, but I don’t know that it would have been any worse because Pacquiao wasn’t going to make it out of that round.

At best, Pacquiao would have been staggering around the ring like a drunk after being poleaxed by Marquez in the 6th. All it would have taken for Marquez to flatten the Filipino again would be to measure him and then blast him with a right hand that would have done the same thing that the knockout punch did.

Pacquiao was given a four month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, so he’s not going to be able to fight for a while yet, because he’s not even allowed to spar for the six 60 days of that suspension. If his promoter Bob Arum wants to get him back in the ring, he’s going to have to wait for the suspension to run out, and then he’ll able to start getting ready for rematch that he and his promoter wants with Marquez.
