Marquez: Pacquiao tried to take advantage of my cut in the 6th

marquez81By Chris Williams: A big part of what led to Manny Pacquiao getting knocked clean out by Juan Manuel Marquez in the 6th round on December 8th was Pacquiao’s foolish mistake of trying to finish off the skilled Mexican warrior after cutting him on the bridge of the nose in the 5th round. Marquez sensed that Pacquiao had changed his game plan after seeing Marquez’s blood and attempted to blast him out with nonstop punches in a wild man approach.

It was the exact wrong thing to do against Marquez because he was able to take advantage of Pacquiao’s out of control fighting style to knock him out with a perfect right hand.

Marquez said in an interview with Golpe a Golpe “After the sixth, Manny Pacquiao wanted to take advantage of my bleeding but I had an answer for him, an answer that landed really hard.”
Marquez further said that two of his knuckles on his right hand were badly swollen from hitting Pacquiao in the head. He said he hit Pacquiao so hard that his knuckled swelled up and you can imagine what it must have been like for Pacquiao to get hit with a punch that hard.

Pacquiao thought he had Marquez when he was cut, and he seemed to lose his senses completely by fighting all out instead of realizing that he with a highly skilled counter puncher. Pacquiao should have known that he couldn’t fight this way because he had tried fighting in a wild man manner in the three previous fights and it had never worked.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach was egging him on all throughout the training camp, telling Pacquiao to be more aggressive because he felt that was the key to beating Marquez. It was the wrong training advice for Pacquiao because that’s the type of training advice that you don’t give to your fighter when he’s facing a counter puncher that has his number like Marquez.
