Marquez: I want to knock Pacquiao out

Image: Marquez: I want to knock Pacquiao outBy Eric Thomas: You can’t blame Juan Manuel Marquez for being a little distrustful of the judges. After all, he feels he won all three fights with Manny Pacquiao, but he’s not been given a decision yet.

Marquez fought well enough to deserve being given a win in three fights, but with judging a fight being a subjective thing it’s been his bad luck that he’s found himself on the losing end in two of the three fights with their first fight being scored a draw. But if there was ever a fight where Marquez would get the judges to side with him if the fight is anywhere close, I think it could be this one.

The judges likely won’t want to be feeling the heat if they too give Pacquiao a decision that the boxing public largely disagrees with like they did in huge numbers the last two times that Pacquiao got wins over Marquez.

Marquez said to the BBC Sport “I am looking for the knockout. I have trained really hard and I feel ready. I am looking for the knockout because the judges gave another decision [in his last fight with Pacquiao].”

This could be the fight where Marquez might actually be able to stop Pacquiao. We saw Pacquiao looking old and unable to fight hard for any length of time in his last fight against Tim Bradley. In the Marquez-Pacquiao 3 fight, Pacquiao was hit hard all night long and it seemed like he didn’t like the shots, as he backed away numerous times to get away from Marquez. It would have been interesting to see if Marquez could have stopped Pacquiao in that fight, but he would have needed a good set of wheels to catch up to Pacquiao each time he would retreat to escape the heat from Marquez’s punches.

Pacquiao, 34, is younger than Marquez by five years, but the two fighters look to be about the same age, and Marquez seems to be fighting on a higher level right now. Pacquiao seems to have lost something in the past four fights and I’m wondering if he can get it back.
