By Chris Williams: I guess it’s safe to say that Manny Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach aren’t going to get their wish of Juan Manuel Marquez foolishly fighting Pacquiao in a toe-to-toe battle, as Marquez’s trainer Nacho Beristain dismissed that nonsense, saying that it’s not going to happen.
Beristain points out that Pacquiao and Marquez will fight like they’ve always fought, and there won’t be any chance of style for either fighter for this this there fourth fight together on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Beristain told RingTV “There is no way that Pacquiao and Marquez can do a toe-to-toe fight. There is simply no way. There is no such things with these guys. They can’t and will not fight toe-to-toe, because that’s not their styles.”
Beristain went onto say that Pacquiao doesn’t fight like that and never has. Pacquiao likes to come forward, land some shots, and then back away. Pacquiao then frequently goes on an attack immediately if his opponent charges him looking to land shots.
Beristain is hoping that Pacquiao comes at Marquez in a reckless manner because he sees this as giving Marquez excellent opportunities for him to land his counter punches. That’s the kind of fighting that Marquez thrives on because he does really well when his opponent is fighting aggressive in throwing a lot of punches. That’s how counter punchers like Marquez succeed. They do remarkably well against the Pacquiao types that bum rush their opponents in predictable patterns.
This is why it’s really disappointing to learn that Roach has come up with the crazy notion that the way to beat Marquez is for his fighter Pacquiao to be more aggressive, throw more punches and to go toe-to-toe with him. If Pacquiao does fight like that, he’ll get countered repeatedly and he may keel over due to exhaustion more than because of the punishment Marquez will inflict upon him.
