Arum: A Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is not as urgent right now

mayweather500By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he’s not in a hurry to try and put together a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. right now. His main priority is to find out from Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez if they want to get together for a fifth fight in 2013 to fight again rather at some time during the New Year.

Arum said to 8countnews.com “Floyd Mayweather Jr-Manny Pacquiao. That fight can happen down the line. That fights not as urgent but it’s possible. Never say never.”

Of course it’s possible. It might be Pacquiao’s last chance for a huge payday if Marquez knocks him out later on in 2013 or if Pacquiao continues to struggle against other opposition. You just can’t know what will happen with him. He may be fine and fight like he had before his loss to Marquez, and then again he could get knocked cold every time he fights.

In that case I’d like to think that Arum would wise enough to rush the fight with Mayweather before the Pacquiao gravy train grinds to a complete screeching halt for all of time.

When it’s near the end, I have a feeling that Arum won’t be talking about a need for an outdoor stadium needing to be built or the need for one of Pacquiao’s nicks or scratches to heal before he can put him in with Mayweather. I think Arum will look to make the Mayweather fight no matter what he has to do, because when it’s over you’ve got to cash out while there’s still some money to get, and if Pacquiao is getting knocked around by even average fighters then the Mayweather fight will need to be made and made quick before the boxing public loses complete interest in the fight.
