Mike Perez: “Return of the Rebel”

By Jack Tarpey: As if from out of nowhere Mike “the rebel” Perez is back, after months of probing the web for any updates whatsoever of what has become an enigma of the heavyweight division he finally re-appears and might I add he has appeared to have bagged himself quite a match up in former WBA champion Ruslan “white Tyson” Chagaev, Perez was relatively unknown before last year’s Prizefighter tournament where in the words of Julius Caeser ‘he came, he saw, he conquered.‘

After his sensational performance in the Prizefighter tournament the stage was set for him get a shot at becoming a global star, I mean how hard can it be to market a Mike Tyson-esque Cuban heavyweight Prizefighter champion, fighting under Irish colours and who has adapted a fighting style of never playing it safe and always coming to fight, he simply enters the ring looking to overwhelm his opponents with his staggering high punch rate, this sort of exciting style makes for great viewing and should no doubt attract colossal attention in the heavyweight division, as long as he can get the results of course.

Unfortunately after the Prizefighter tournament Mike was only able to follow up with 2 fights against 2nd tier opponents picking up the win in both of course, but without claiming stoppages, after that he was been in obscurity for about a year, rumours are due to injury and visa problems.

Surely if he can come back and achieve a positive result against a former world champion then he could quickly see himself in line for a shot at regular WBA champ Alexander Povetkin, as Povetkin very cleverly manages to dodge the giants of the division and stick to fighters who resemble his own height, one thing for sure if Mike Perez does manage to get through Chagaev we can certainly add another name to potential world rulers once the Klitschko’s decide to hang up the gloves, don’t get me wrong Chagaev is no way a pushover and should not be taken lightly in the slightest, I just feel that Perez needs and wants the win more than Chagaev but as always only time will tell.

So to sum up after a year out we finally get another glimpse of Mike Perez on 2012/12/1, is he the real deal? My heart says yes but at only 6ft and no real big scalp to his resume I have to be a realist and no matter how much I wish for heyday Mike Tyson to be reincarnated in the form of a Cuban Ireland flag draped rebel, I may just have to face facts that Mike Tyson was a one of a kind.

Look forward to your thoughts fellow boxing heads.
