Amir Khan…the next move?

Image: Amir Khan…the next move?By Paul Walsh: After his recent split with legendary trainer Freddie Roach and coming off the back of a heavy knockout loss to the un-fancied American Danny Garcia, it is time for Amir Khan to stop the Hollywood lifestyle and get his boxing career back on track.

There are so many questions he needs to address. Will he stay in the light welterweight division, who will his next trainer be and will he change his style?? Khan has indeed addressed these problems but I am skeptical as to whether or not they are right.

As expected Khan has teamed up with Virgil Hunter, the current trainer of unbeaten American Andre Ward and his next fight is against a bit of an unknown quantity in Carlos Molina but the question still remains will anyone be able to change Khan’s style? It almost feels like Khan and his team have looked at the boxers in the world and picked the one with a great defence to be his trainer.

This may seem like a good Business move and you are right it is a good “Business” move, working with the trainer of one of the best fighters in the world and fighting someone who you “should” be able to beat. I can’t help but think Khan needs to have boxing people around him and make his decisions based on boxing and not his financial status. As Freddie Roach showed it is not that easy to change the mentality of a fighter no matter how good you are at your job and I think Hunter will struggle to implement change with Khan.

However, the choice of opponent I think is a smart one. Someone with enough clout to not be considered a push over but on the other hand he does not possess any skills which Khan will fear. Unfortunately for Khan he will always be considered as “chinny” so it is unlikely that he will ever be put in with a big hitter until he improves his defence and hopefully this is something that Virgil Hunter can help with.

I fully expect Khan to steamroller Molina and put his name right back in the frame for a mega fight next year. This can only be good for British boxing as apart from Ricky Burns and Carl Froch there is no one out there who is giving our friends on the other side of the pond any sleepless nights.
