Amir Khan: Last chance saloon

Image: Amir Khan: Last chance saloonby Tom Drury: Amir Khan’s upcoming fight on December 15th against the little known, light hitting Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) is a sink or swim match up. Khan’s career has been disappointing to say the least. The Khan hype machine was in full flow after he got knocked cold by the unknown, unproven Colombian hitter Breidis Prescott and hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach stepped in to take over the reigns as Khan’s trainer.

Khan was carefully matched after the Prescott defeat building a resume of over-matched and shot fighters, fighters like Marco Antonio Barrera and Zab Judah, although I do give Khan credit for the Marcos Maidana fight. Controversial due to Lamont Peterson’s positive test for a banned substance after the fight, Peterson did a number on Khan. His latest outing against Danny Garcia, Khan ended up on the wrong end of a savage left hook ending the fight in the fourth round. No doubt Khan has skills he has good movement and lightning hand speed unfortunately this is not enough to succeed at world level in boxing.

It seems Khan has been distracted by the celebrity side of boxing instead of putting in the hard work and dedication this sport requires to be successful, Khan will find it hard to restart his career as fans on both sides of the Atlantic have lost interest. Unfortunately Khan does not have the mentality or physical attributes to be a great fighter, Kahn will always fall short when matched up against good solid, powerful fighters like Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse so his dream of cleaning out the 140 pound division is merely a pipe dream. A move up to 147 would also be a devastating mistake for Khan; the boxing skills, granite chins and power hitters in that division Khan could not compete with. Mayweather, Pacquiao, Kell Brook, Tim Bradley, Andre Berto, Victor Ortiz, Josesito Lopez, would all KO or stop Khan within the early rounds.

Khan has made a good move in employing Virgil Hunter as his trainer, but even the Andre Ward S.O.G trainer cannot perform miracles. I hope Khan fights some top opposition after he beats stepping stone Carlos Molina, fights against Danny Garcia [rematch], Matthysse, and Juan Manuel Marquez. Sadly if not, Khan will become a distant memory in boxing and fans will give up on him altogether.
