(Photo: Ricky Hatton twitter) By Scott Gilfoid: With over 7 weeks to before his fight with former WBA World welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-1, 21 KO’s), Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s) is already looking cut up and ready to fight. It sure does look like Hatton, 33, is overdoing it a bit. He’s never been this cut up with that much time before a major fight, and I think we could see an over-trained Ricky when he steps inside the ring with the 35-year-old Senchenko.
At least it’s a good excuse Hatton can use if things turn out badly for him in this fight, and by judging how cut up he is already I think things could go to pieces rapidly for him. I don’t know why Hatton is this in shape with as much time that he had before the Senchenko bout. It doesn’t look like a wise decision if you ask me. Normally, Hatton uses his training camps as mini-fat farms by coming into them badly overweight and then slowly burning the blubber off until he’s ready for the fight.
I always thought it was stupid as heck to balloon up in weight in between fights and then have to melt all that useless flab off just to fight. I’m surprised Hatton was able to beat half the guys he did following this practice. But on the flip side, Hatton looks too in shape right now, like he’s in danger of leaving his best in the training camp rather than in the actual fight.
I think this could come back to haunt him if he’s too worn down from being in shape for too long of a period. You want to at least have some fat on you when you’re going through seven grueling weeks of training. I guess it might not matter because Senchenko isn’t all that good and even an over-trained Hatton probably can beat him. But if he can’t then Hatton has got the perfect excuse to use to explain away his loss.
Hatton will be fighting Senchenko on November 24th at the Manchester Arena (formerly M.E.N Arena), Manchester, Lancashire, UK. The fight is already sold out.
