Image: DeGale wants Froch in 2013By Scott Gilfoid: EBU super middleweight champion James DeGale (12-1, 9 KO’s) is hoping he can get a fight against IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch next year in 2013 if possible. DeGale’s timing to be talking about a Froch fight couldn’t have been more worse if he tried. DeGale has fought only once in the past year in defending his EBU strap against 37-year-old Italian Cristian Sanavia.

DeGale said to Sky Sports Punchlines “Carl Froch is a great fighter and a road warrior who I really like watching. Fighting him next year for a world title would be a fantastic fight for Britain.”

I guess a Froch-DeGale would do well in the UK, but you couldn’t sell that fight anywhere else, believe me. However, I think DeGale’s chances of getting a fight against Froch are nonexistent. Froch isn’t going to take the fight because he’s got big money fights against Lucian Bute and Mikkel Kessler to keep him busy next year. After he faces those guys, provided that he’s still the IBF champion, he’ll have to fight his mandatory challenger, which will probably be Adonis Stevenson. That’s going to take up the entire year. There won’t be any time for Froch to slip in a fight against European level super middleweight like DeGale.

What DeGale, #4 WBO, #5 WBC, #6 IBF, needs to do instead of worrying trying to get a fight Froch is to start fight on a regular basis and looking good for a change. He’s looked bloody awful since he started facing halfway decent opposition and looks like he’s been found out with his fights against George Groves and Piotr Wilczewski. While I think DeGale is better than Groves, I don’t see DeGale as a world title caliber fighter. He’s a good Euro fighter/fringe contender at best. He certainly doesn’t deserve a fight against Froch looking as awful as he is right now.

DeGale will be fighting on October 13th against a still to be determined opponent at the Glow, Bluewater, Greenhithe, Kent, United Kingdom. DeGale expects to fight in December as well, as he tries to make up for all that lost time from his promoter problems.
