Audley Harrison: I’m itching to go again

Image: Audley Harrison: I'm itching to go againBy Scott Gilfoid: It’s not enough that 40-year-old Audley Harrison (28-6, 21 KO’s) is coming off of a 90 second knockout loss to British heavyweight champion David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) earlier this month in yet another humiliating loss, but now Harrison says he’s eager to get back in the ring and continue with his sagging boxing career. I wonder which up and coming British heavyweight will use him for a stepping stone now? We’ve already seen David Haye and Price use Audley for that purpose. That leaves Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury still to go.

Harrison said on his twitter page “I looked at the tape [of the Price fight] and saw my mistake. Price advantage with a brutal finish, but I think I may have to roll the dice one more time…I’m itching to go again.”

The British heavyweight scene is to tiny that they end up recycling guys like Harrison over and over again to put in with their heavyweights to give them a scalp with a name. The reason why Harrison is so valuable for that purpose is because he captured a gold medal in the 2000 Olympics for Britain, and was briefly a popular fighter for the country.

Harrison froze in his losses to Price and Haye, unable to pull the trigger with his shots. This made it easy for Price and Haye to blast him out without any problems. But you’d have thought that Harrison would have learned his lesson from the Haye fight and would have been smart enough to realize that he absolutely needed to let his hands go in order for him to have a fighting chance at beating the straight up stork-like Price.

But instead of throwing punches, Harrison stood there begging to be knocked out by Price and he accommodated him by smashing him to bits in a 1st round knockout. I can’t really put my finger on what holds Harrison back from letting his hands go, because he seems to have good left hand power and can be dangerous if he actually throws punches, but he doesn’t. Nothing will change in the future because Harrison locks up for some reason in big fights.
