Why was Chavez Jr. smiling so much after loss to Martinez?

Image: Why was Chavez Jr. smiling so much after loss to Martinez?By Dan Ambrose: I’m not sure if anyone caught former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s post fight interview with HBO’s Max Kellerman after Chavez Jr’s loss to Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) last Saturday but if you did you might have noticed that Chavez Jr. was doing an awful of smiling. He looked like the cat ate the canary. It was so out of place for the circumstances of the situation. Shouldn’t Chavez Jr. been crying?

Chavez Jr. looked positively gleeful for someone who had just lost by a lopsided 12 round decision and who been beaten for the time. I thought was very, very strange. It looked really out of place from my perspective. Usually when a fighter gets beaten for the first time they’re upset, frowning, complaining and just sad. But Chavez Jr. looked happy, as if he had something when in fact he lost 11 out of 12 rounds of the fight.

The only thing I can think of for Chavez Jr’s constant smiling is that he may not have believed himself capable of winning the fight, so that when he was able to knock Martinez down in the 12th it was like a minor victory for him. In other words, he could escape the fight with some semblance of dignity. That’s the way I took it, because fighters rarely smile when they lose for the first time, especially by the kind of lopsided scores that Chavez Jr. got beat by.

Chavez Jr. said “I almost knocked him out.”

I don’t agree with that, but if it makes Chavez Jr. feel better than more power to him. He staggered Martinez and then after landing a left hook, Chavez Jr. seemed to partially push Martinez to the canvas rather than sending him down with an actual punch.

Chavez Jr. then went on to say that he wants a rematch with Martinez, which was also echoed by Martinez even though he completely dominated the entire fight. He obviously wants the rematch because of all the cash he can get in fighting Chavez Jr. again especially if it takes place in the huge Cowboys Stadium in Texas like they’re talking about.
