Image: Salido-Garcia & Martirosyan-Lara doubleheader set for November 10th on HBOBy Jason Kim: HBO will be putting on one of their better cards for this November 10th with a doubleheader show headlined by WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) defending his title against unbeaten challenger Miguel “Mikey” Garcia (29-0, 25 KO’s) and junior middleweight contenders Erislandy Lara (17-1-1, 11 KO’s) going up against Vanes Martirosyan (32-0, 20 KO’s) at the Wynn Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, Showtime had the chance to match the offer to get the fight but they passed on it, perhaps realizing that none of these guys are real big names in the United States. The fights are great, but Lara, Martirosyan, Salido and Garcia are still guys without a substantial fan base in the U.S at this time.

Both fights are going to be extremely exciting in particular the Salido-Garcia fight. That one matches the veteran 31-year-old Salido against the younger, MUCH less experienced but hard hitting Garcia. It’s difficult to pick a winner in this fight, because Garcia has several things going for him. He’s a lot younger than Salido at 24, and he’s got the ability to box as well as punch.

So what this means is that if he can’t hurt Salido with his single power shots like he typically does against the weak opposition that he’s been fed throughout his career, Garcia can always fall back on his boxing ability to try and box his way to a decision. I think it might be difficult for Garcia to jab his way to a victory over Salido, however, because Salido will get past Garcia’s jab all night long and force him to go toe-to-toe.

If Garcia has the ability to fight like this, then he could win. But it’s a big question mark whether Garcia can do this because he’s not had to in any of his fights because he’s matched so weakly up to this point. He really needed to start fighting quality guys a couple of years ago, but he’s been consistently matched against guys that had no chance against him. As such, we may see a stunted Garcia take a beating and get embarrassed by Salido on November 10th.

Lara and Martirosyan will be fighting in a WBC junior middleweight title eliminator bout. The winner of this fight becomes the mandatory for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the WBC 154 pound champion. Martirosyan has a glossy record and good skills. He can punch and box equally well. He’s hard to hit when he’s boxing and he’s got the ability to get in quick to land shots and then get away. Lara is more of pressure fighter with excellent boxing skills, good power and superb defensive ability. Lara is from Cuba and he fights out of the southpaw stance, and he’s very hard to beat. Martirosyan is going to have problems with this guy unless he can get him out of there. Martirosyan has the skills to win this fight but I’m not so sure about whether he can handle Lara’s God give talent. Lara is just so athletic that reminds me a lot of Mayweather but with a different type of style.
