Koncz: Pacquiao and Marquez don’t want a 5th fight between them

Image: Koncz: Pacquiao and Marquez don't want a 5th fight between themBy Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao’s close adviser Michael Koncz says that Pacquiao and 39-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez want this to be the last time that they face each other when they meet up on December 8th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada for the fourth time. Koncz sees a knockout occurring from this fight, although he doesn’t say who’s going to be the one getting the knockout.

Koncz said this to blogtalkradio.com as quoted by examiner.com “Neither of these fighters want to have number five…Manny and Marquez are going to change their strategy and there’s going to be a lot more aggression in here, because they both want to put an end to the trilogy…somebody is going to knockout somebody.”

They don’t want a fifth fight? Why are they fighting a fourth time? We’re going to probably see a 5th fight, 6th fight, 7th fight and whatever until the fights no longer make money.

Are you telling me that Pacquiao wasn’t trying to score a knockout in the first three fights? What is Koncz smoking? Does he actually expect boxing fans to believe that Pacquiao wasn’t trying to stop Marquez in the first three fights? What exactly was Pacquiao trying to do when he knocked Marquez down three times in the first fight in 2004 and once in the second fight in 2008? Was that just for kicks? Man, it just looks like Koncz is trying to sell the fight by coming up with anything that boxing fans can latch on to in order to fork over some cash to see this rematch. I mean, they don’t need to come up with this bit about how there will be more aggression this time and how they’ll both be looking for knockouts. That’s weak, but what can you expect? The fight has taken three times already and it’s old hat now with boxing fans to the point where they can pretty much predict how it’ll go.

Pacquiao will rush Marquez likes he always does, maybe land a shot or two and then get tagged two or three times in return with head snapping shots. Marquez will likely land the cleanest shots in the fight, dominate the action and then lose decision to the more popular Pacquiao. It’ll be like watching a professional wrestling fight with a scrip where you know who’s going to win and why. I’d love this fight if the right guy had been given the wins in the past three fights, but it’s so disappointing when you see Marquez dominate and then get jobbed over and over and over again. Do I expect anything this time? Nope. What happened in the past will happen in the future. Pacquiao will win the fight but appear to lose.

I think Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, needs to sit down with Marquez, Pacquiao and Koncz to come up with a better theme for selling this fight. It doesn’t seem believable with Pacquiao and Marquez both saying the same thing and sounding like they’re parroting a line when they talk about how they’re going to be more aggressive this time. Surely they can do better than that. How about some anger and intensity between these guys? They look like close friends in all the meetings. Marquez should be looking to tear Pacquiao apart each time he sees him.
