Image: Alfredo Angulo vs. Raul Casarez on Mares-Moreno card on November 10thBy Dan Ambrose: Former junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (20-2, 17 KO’s) will be taking an easy tune-up bout against little known middleweight Raul Casarez (19-2, 9 KO’s) on November 10th in a Showtime televised bout on the undercard of the WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares vs. Anselmo Moreno bout at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, United States, according to RingTV.

There’s not much to get excited about with the 25-year-old Casarez. He’s been fighting pretty much exclusively 3rd tier opposition his entire career. Casarez tried stepping it up a couple of times against 2nd tier opposition in Rudy Cisneros and Michael Soberanis in the past and was beaten by both of them.

Angulo, 30, missed eight months of action due to an 8 month stint in the El Centro Detention Center in El Centro, California after Angulo had overstayed his U.S visa. Angulo was finally released last July and is looking to get his career back together after all that time off.

The last time that Angulo fought was last November in a fight where he was battered by James Kirkland in a 6th round TKO defeat. Angulo knocked Kirkland down in the 1st round but then gassed out while going for the knockout. This allowed Kirkland to come back and severely punish Angulo for the next five rounds until the fight was mercifully halted in the 6th. I don’t put the entire blame on Angulo losing that fight just because he tired out.

He looked like he was going to lose to Kirkland anyway because he didn’t have the speed to stay in there with him and he had problems in taking the heavy shots that Kirkland was nailing him with. I think it would have been the same result even if Angulo hadn’t gassed out. Kirkland just looked superior to him.

According to RingTV, Angulo will be working with the Oakland, California based Virgil Hunter to train with him instead his previous trainer Nacho Beristain. Hunter could possibly help Angulo if he can teach him some defense and figure out a way for him to learn to pace himself a little better. Angulo can’t afford to jump on anyone the way that he did against Kirkland in the 1st round, because his stamina is questionable. He should have been able to catch a second wind after a round or two, but Angulo stayed tired for the remainder of the fight and that’s unusual for a junior middleweight. I’ve seen heavyweights gas out after one round, but not a junior middleweight.

Angulo’s power is very real as well as his excellent jab. But it’s going to be hard for Hunter to be able to make any in roads with Angulo’s lack of hand speed and questionable stamina. Those could be things that will get him in trouble when he starts facing quality opposition again at some point. Angulo can definitely beat the 2nd tier guys like Casarez but he’ll run into problems again once he’s faced with fighters that use movement against him Kermit Cintron did in beating him.
