Image: Khan: I've officially left Freddie RoachBy William Mackay: Earlier tonight former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) announced that he has let his trainer Freddie Roach go after three years of being trained by him. Khan says he’s now looking for a new trainer, which is something he’s already been talking about for weeks now.

Khan said on his twitter “Officially I’ve left Freddie Roach. Just spoke to him and had a good professional chat and maybe in the future we would work together. Freddie understand why I’m looking at other trainers and wished me all the best for the future.”

Khan also said he was going to announce who the replacement trainer would be tonight, but then later said he’ll reveal who it is tomorrow.

Whoever gets the job they’re going to have their work cut out for them because Khan’s fragile chin will be a problem no matter what. It’s got be a bad situation because if Khan gets knocked out again, you got to figure that the trainer will likely be sacked shortly there after. That’s kind of what’s happen in the past after Khan was knocked out by Breidis Prescott in 2008, and now after Khan was stopped by Danny Garcia. In each case, the trainer got the boot after the knockout loss.

Roach was telling Khan to box Garcia and stay away from him in their fight last July. But Khan seemed to get excited by the combination of the fan noise and his early success in that fight and chose to slug it out. With Khan throwing bombs, Garcia slipped in a hard left hook in between one of Khan’s shots and knocked him down. From there it was easy for Garcia to finish off the badly hurt Khan.

Khan’s new trainer isn’t going to have long to teach him some defense because Khan is scheduled to fight on December 15th against a still to be determined opponent. I just hope for Khan’s sake he takes on a weak opponent because if he faces someone with power we could see him get knocked out once again.
