Image: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez: A fight to score?By Gerardo Granados: Once more time a young lion faces an old lion king, but this time the fight might not end in a knockout. Southpaw WBC diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) / height 5´10” reach 75¨, has the edge on experience, quality of opposition faced, ring smarts, speed and mobility, over all defense and a powerful left hand.

Meanwhile WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s), height 6´0” reach 73”, has the edge on size, height, youth, hunger, solid chin; he is also a relentless pressure fighter and a good body puncher.

I´ve been told that if Martinez isn’t able to hurt Chavez Jr. then he won’t be able to keep him off and as his fight vs. Antonio Margarito back in 2000, Julio Cesar could walked thru Martinez punches to end up stopping him. Sergio has to adjust to Chavez Jr. boxing style, take advantage on every opening he will get and outsmart the inexperienced young lion.

I´m also been told that if Chavez Jr. is not able to slip or block Martinez’s left he might not be knocked out but still can be cut or swell enough his right eye to get the fight stopped. Julio Cesar must keep pressure the full round countering with speed and better be effective cutting off the ring, in close lean on Martinez with all of his weight and obviously improve his defense, but in this case Chavez Jr. best defense is his attack.

Undoubtedly this is the best fight to watch on September 15th and by the way a good fight that the reader should score at home because after the final round the fight judges might have to decide who the winner is and as usual boxing fans won’t agree on the score cards.

I expect Martinez to build an early lead on points, but after the fifth round Chavez Jr. will become stronger and start to hurt Sergio. I believe Julio Cesar´s chin is good enough to handle Maravilla´s power and also that the son of the legend may not have enough power to stop Sergio with a single punch so I expect a close fight to score. The key to the victory might depend on the stamina of the fighters and on who close stronger the last two rounds.

I´ll bet on Chavez Jr. to win by a close SD12 and for sure will score the bout. But will the reader score the fight too?
