Hunter believes Khan can comeback

Image: Hunter believes Khan can comebackby William Mackay: Virgil Hunter, a potential new trainer for Amir Khan, believes that Khan’s career isn’t over despite him losing his last two fights and getting badly knocked out by WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia. Hunter sees Khan’s offensive potential as something that will help him get through this bad patch in his career.

Speaking with Chris Robinson at Examiner.com, Hunter said “Without a doubt [he can come back]…He has the talent and the ability to come back and I don’t think it’s bad as some people say.”

It’s still unclear whether Hunter will be signed on as Khan’s replacement trainer for Freddie Roach, however. Hunter said that it’s not a done deal and nothing is “Official” at this point. Hunter would obviously be a good replacement for Roach but it’s uncertain whether he’ll get the job or not. Khan reportedly spoke to a number of trainers about the position, but Hunter’s name has been the one that Khan has rumored to have chosen.

Khan does have good offensive skills there’s no question. His jab, speed and power make him a threat to anyone in the light welterweight division. But he makes a lot of mistakes on offensive that get him into a lot of trouble sometimes by his tendency to throw a lot of flurries that leave him susceptible to getting caught with shots. Khan’s kind of fighting style requires that he have a good chin to take the shots that are fired back at him, but it just looks like he’s a little deficient in that area.

Hunter, if he gets the job, will have to work on making Khan a lot more cautious fighter on offense. He can’t keep throwing bombs or combinations like he’s done in the past because everyone he faces now will be loading up on every shot looking to take him out the way that Breidis Prescott and Danny Garcia did. Marcos Maidana almost had Khan out as well in their 2010 bout. For Khan to succeed under the tutelage of Hunter, he will have to fight defensively much of the time, and follow all of his instructions.

Another knockout loss for Khan right now would likely badly hurt his career in terms of money making, as well as his title shot hopes. He’s still ranked in the top 10 even after losing his last two fights, but that no doubt will change if he suffers another loss in his next fight. HBO is still interested in televising Khan’s next fight, but it’s unlikely that they’ll continue to do so if Khan gets flattened the next time out or any time soon. Khan needs to start winning again and he can’t just do that against scrub opponents. HBO has already rejected to Khan opponents offered up to them for Khan’s next fight on December 15th. They obviously want to see Khan fight someone good, and not aging fighters that have seen better days.
