Image: Vitali not retiring yetBy Allan Fox: It looks like WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (45-2, 41 KO’s) will be putting off his retirement for a little while longer. It was thought that Vitali would retire after destroying Manuel Charr earlier this month and focus on a career in politics. However, Vitali is now saying that he intends on continuing his boxing career.

Vitali said on his Facebook page “There is no talk about the end of my career. I’m sorry if I didn’t put enough emphasis on this at the news conference.”

Vitali was clearing up some misunderstanding that came about from some comments he made during a news conference where he said some things that gave the impression that he was retiring.

Here’s what Vitali said as quoted by RIA Novosti: “To boxing lovers everywhere I can say that the Ukrainian flag will be raised and the anthem will be played when Klitschko enters the ring. But if you mean me, then I don’t intend to fight.”

Very strange. It sounds a lot like Vitali was saying he wasn’t going to fight anymore, but it looks like either the translation was wrong or Vitali just wasn’t clear enough on what he meant by this cryptic comment.

Boxing fans would like to see the 41-year-old Vitali continue his career and fight former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. He’s perhaps the most exciting fighter out there for Vitali right now, at least until some of the younger heavyweights like David Price and Tyson Fury step up and start fighting top tier opposition. Vitali will likely be long retired by the time those two heavyweights fight their first quality opponents, as neither seem to be willing to step it up right now.

Other than Haye, Vitali’s options are slim for his next fight. There’s Bermane Stiverne, Kubrat Pulev and Alexander Ustinov, all limited heavyweights with good power but a lot of flaws.
