Chavez Jr. said “I know I am bigger and stronger than he is but I know I need to box. You are going to see a complete boxer…My height advantage will also help me to box and do some other things in the ring.”

It’s hard to imagine that Chavez Jr. will be able to box for more than part of a round because he’s just not wired to do that, and he’s not going to be able to suddenly become disciplined to fight in that manner just because he’s fighting Martinez. Chavez Jr. also lacks the stamina to box for 12 rounds, because he’s carrying all that weight. At 180 pounds, Chavez Jr. is only able to conserve strength when he’s fighting flat-footed and plodding forward at a slow pace.

If his trainer Freddie Roach suddenly has Chavez Jr. moving constantly around the ring at a fast pace, then it’s going to put Chavez Jr. in a position where he’ll likely run out of gas in a short period of time. If you look at the fights in which Chavez Jr. has tried to box against Peter Manfredo Jr and Sebastian Zbik, Chavez Jr. was only able to do it for a short period of time without looking winded. To ask him to move for 12 rounds against Martinez would be a recipe for failure.

Most likely Chavez Jr. will try this for a round and then abandon it and go back to trying to mug Martinez on the inside. Chavez Jr’s whole game is built around fighting on the inside and if he tries to be anything other than what he’s been in the past he’ll end up getting clowned by Martinez.
