Sulaiman wants Chavez Jr. to fight Sergio Martinez again

chavez95By Dan Ambrose: World Boxing Council (WBC) president Jose Sulaiman is interested in seeing former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) face the current WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s).

It’s unclear why it should matter to Sulaiman that Chavez Jr. and Martinez fight again considering Martinez’s lopsided 12 round unanimous decision over Chavez Jr. was pretty conclusive. There was no doubt about whom the better fighter was of the two and Chavez Jr. took a real beating in the fight.

Sulaiman said to the record.com.mx “Give it a try, Martinez.”

Chavez Jr. says “It was a mistake”

chavez675By Dan Ambrose: In an interview with ESPN, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) came clean about his testing positive for marijuana for his last fight against Sergio Martinez last September. Chavez Jr. was subsequently fined $900,000 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission [NSAC], a fine that his promoter Bob Arum is looking to appeal and have it reduced considerably.

Chavez Jr. said to ESPN “It was only a mistake I made. I did nothing to hurt anyone. No, seriously, nothing.”

The NSAC wasn’t pleased with Chavez Jr. testing positive given that it was the second time he had tested positive for a banned drug. It wasn’t a performance enhancing drug that he tested positive for, but the Commission seems to see it as being a serious thing because it being the second time that he’s tested positive for a drug

Chavez Jr. likely to sue NSAC over $900K fine

chavez923By Dan Ambrose: The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) gave former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. a hefty $900,000 fine for him testing positive for marijuana in September of last year for his fight with Sergio Martinez. According to fightnews.com, Chavez Jr. will be filing a lawsuit to sue the NSAC for the huge fine because it’s out of proportion from previous fines given out to other fighters.

Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum pointed out that former world champion Fernando Vargas was fined $100,000 for testing positive for steroids, and yet Chavez Jr. is fined nine times that amount for testing positive for a non-performance enhancing drug. Marijuana doesn’t enhance an athletes’ performance, and it’s more likely to hurt their performance than anything.

Chavez Jr. receives $900K fine and 9 month suspension from NSAC

chavez56By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) was really smacked around today in his hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission to determine his case for his positive marijuana test from his last fight against Sergio Martinez last year on September 15h.

Chavez Jr. basically threw himself on the mercy of the Commission. He had no real concrete reasons why he chose to use marijuana in the weeks before his fight with Martinez. The only thing Chavez Jr. could say is he smoked in nine days before the fight in order to relieve stress.

Sergio Martinez: Chavez Jr. will have to accept anti-doping controls before there will be a rematch

martinez7 - CopyBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) isn’t going to make it easy for former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) to try and get revenge against him in a rematch. Martinez wants Chavez Jr. to first agree to have anti-doping tests in the lead up to their possible September rematch before Martinez will agree to fight him again. Chavez Jr. has been caught in the past with diuretics in his system before one of his fights.

Martinez said on his twitter “Jr. [Chavez Jr] shouldn’t talk about revenge. First, [there needs to be] anti-doping controls that he accepts, because there’s not the slightest option [the fight will take place without them.”

Sergio Martinez wants blood testing for Chavez Jr. rematch

Image: Sergio Martinez wants blood testing for Chavez Jr. rematchBy Dan Ambrose: IF former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) wants a rematch against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) next year then Chavez Jr. is going to have to be ready to accept full blood and urine testing for performance enhancing drugs or for any banned drugs for that matter. Martinez, 37, was put off after learning about Chavez Jr. testing positive for their fight last September at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada and he wants to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Sergio Martinez to have knee surgery on November 12th

Image: Sergio Martinez to have knee surgery on November 12thBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) will reportedly be having knee surgery on November 12th to repair damage to his right knee from his fight with former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last month, according to fightnews.com. Martinez, 37, believes he’ll be as good as new by the end of November.

Martinez is probably going to find out the hard way that it’s going to take many months for his knee to heal up. He’s going to have to strengthen the knee and that’s going to take a lot of time. Even the, it’s likely the knee won’t what it was before the injury. Hopefully, Martinez won’t have to wear some kind of constricting knee brace to support the knee when he fights, but that’s something that he might need to do.
