Are Froch’s fans excited about him fighting Yusaf Mack?

Image: Are Froch's fans excited about him fighting Yusaf Mack?By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it’s academic at this point. IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) won’t be facing a super middleweight contender for his next fight on November 17th in Nottingham, England. Instead, Froch will fight a light heavyweight contender in Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s). Having seen Mack fight and get knocked out on a number of occasions, I see this as a terrible choice of opponent for Froch.

It’s not as if Froch has taken a lot of punishment in his last fight earlier this year against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute for him to take a light opponent like this. This is like Froch taking two easy fights in a row and that’s sad.

My question is how will Froch’s British fans take this fight? Will they be excited about wanting to see Froch slaughter a badly over-matched Mack and stream into the Nottingham Arena in high numbers so that they can be part of history to watch this event or will they stay away in high numbers to send a message to Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn that they won’t stomach paying to see mismatches.

Obviously, most of Froch’s fans won’t bother going to see the fight live but will watch it on television to avoid the hassle and the expense of driving down to Nottingham to see it. But what about the total diehard Froch fans that are willing to travel and pay to see him fight. Will they want to pay to see Froch fight this guy? If I were a huge Froch fan, I wouldn’t pay a dime to see this one.

Even if I thought Froch was the best fighter that ever laced up a pair of boxing shoes, I wouldn’t pay to see it because I wouldn’t want to dump all that cash paying for tickets, parking, gas and good to risk seeing a fight that will be one-sided from start to finish with it potentially ending by the 3rd round. Fighters and their promoters need to realize that they’re in the entertainment industry. If they give boxing fans a bad product than these same fans will be turned off and may not come back. It’s kind of like being a restaurant owner.

If you serve up some bad food to paying customers you can count on those customers never coming back and then you end up losing out. For this reason I think Froch and Hearn are making a huge mistake in picking out Mack to fight instead of a quality guy like the talented Thomas Oosthuizen or Andre Dirrell. Those guys would bring a good product and boxing fans wouldn’t be turned off by the fights.
