Robert Guerrero: Fans want to see me fight Mayweather, not Broner

Image: Robert Guerrero: Fans want to see me fight Mayweather, not BronerBy Dan Ambrose: WBC welterweight interim champion Robert Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO’s) still badly wants a fight against WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr, but he’s been completely ignored by him. That hasn’t stopped Guerrero from talking it up with the media about him and Mayweather getting it on.

Guerrero said on his twitter today in a conversation with Dan Rafael “Fans want to see me vs. Floyd Mayweather, not the young pup [Adrien Broner]. 11 year several world titles in several divisions. I want the best.”

I don’t see there being any real interest from boxing fans to see Guerrero fight Mayweather unless he’s talking about his own fans, which aren’t in high numbers. From what I see, no one wants to see a fight between Guerrero and Mayweather because it wouldn’t draw well and it would be such a terrible mismatch. Guerrero barely beat Selcuk Aydin in his last fight, so what does that tell you?

Guerrero, 29, considers his interim WBC title as him having won a world title. I don’t know of too many fighters that count interim titles as having won a world title. I’ve always thought it was so phony category that the sanctioning bodies created in order to make more money. It’s one thing being an interim champion and whole different matter completely being a full champion.

Guerrero really should try and get the Broner fight, because that’s probably the only realistic option he has of ever getting a really big fight. Broner isn’t a pay per view star yet, he’s still popular enough to where Guerrero would really help his career out in a big way if he were able to beat him. It certainly would help his career a lot more than his recent win over Selcuk Aydin last month. Guerrero didn’t impress in that fight in winning the WBC interim 147 lb title. He lacked power and his stamina was also poor, as he ran out of gas late in the fight and took punishment from the 10th round on.

Rafael likes the idea of Guerrero fighting Broner, saying “I love idea of Ghostboxing vs. Adrien Broner. Robert had 1 fight over 138, Adrien will be big 135, can go higher. They’re about the same size.”

Rafael is right. Broner and Guerrero are about the same size, but the power, speed and talent is clearly in Broner’s favor. I don’t blame Guerrero for not wanting to fight Broner because it’s too risky of a fight and he’d likely take a beating and lose whatever tiny chance he had of getting a Mayweather fight. There’s pretty no chance of Guerrero ever fighting Mayweather because he brings to the table in terms of money because he doesn’t have a huge fan base and he’s not well known by casual boxing fans.
