Image: Prescott the best option for Khan's next fightBy William Mackay: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) needs to find an opponent for December that will get him back on track after losing to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia by a 4th round TKO last month.

Khan needs an opponent that boxing fans will respect and one that will actually help him improve his game. The perfect guy for Khan is Colombian Breidis Prescott (26-4, 20 KO’s).

Khan was viciously knocked out in the 1st round by Prescott in 2008 in a fight where Prescott had Khan wobbling after hitting him with a stiff jab in the opening seconds of the fight. For some reason Khan never fought Prescott again and just let the loss to him stand. Although Khan said he didn’t need to fight Prescott again because he learned his lesson from the fight, you can see that Khan didn’t learn much because he was just knocked out again by Garcia.

Here are the options for Khan’s next fight:

Zab Judah – busy
Mike Alvarado -busy
Paulie Malignaggi -busy and wants Ricky Hatton fight
Ruslan Provodnikov – possible but not a big name
Erik Morales – busy
Lucas Matthyse – busy
Victor Ortiz – recovering from broken jaw
Devon Alexander – busy
Tim Bradley – looking for big money fight against Pacquiao

Prescott is really the only one that’s available for Khan to fight, if Khan and Golden Boy are willing to fight him again.

Prescott has struggled somewhat since beating Khan, losing to Kevin Mitchell, Mike Alvarado and Paul McCloskey. The loss to McCloskey was controversial, but even if it wasn’t, Khan is hardly looking great himself with two consecutive losses.

In his last fight last Saturday night, Prescott looked good in beating Francisco Figueroa by an 8 round unanimous decision in Miami. Prescott knocked Figueroa down twice.

If Khan could get past Prescott it would be a huge positive for his career, because Prescott is one of the best punchers in the light welterweight division. Of course, if Prescott knocks Khan out cold, then at least Khan can move on and find another line of work. He’s going into promoting and this could give him the opportunity to put all his energy into that field rather than wasting time in the pro game and eventually getting put out of his misery by someone else.
