The two fighters seemed to genuinely dislike each other and Martinez hit a nerve when talking about Chavez Jr’s father during the interview.

Here’s some of the back and forth discussion that went on:

Kellerman to Chavez Jr: “How do you keep Sergio Martinez off of you”?

Chavez Jr: “I’ll just do my thing. I’ll be prepared 100 percent to fight all rounds. That’s the only thing I’ll need to beat him.”

Martinez: “You’re living in a delusion, based on your legendary father. When are you going to stop believing that?”

Chavez Jr: “Is that what you think?”

Martinez: “When will you start being just Julio Cesar Chavez, your own person, not just the son of so and so.”

Chavez Jr: “I’ll never stop being my father’s son.”

Martinez: “Of course not, but once you’re in the ring, it’ll be just you alone and not with your father.”

Chavez Jr: “When I knock you out on September 15th, that day I’ll be whoever you want me to be. This [Chavez Jr points to his own chin] is the best chin.”

Martinez: “How can you fight someone you can’t hit?”

Chavez Jr: (laughing) “You think I can’t hit you?”

Martinez: “I’ll sign on the dotted line.”

Chavez Jr: “Where will you hide?”

Martinez: “No, I’ll be hitting you.”

Chavez Jr: “What do you think about the time you lost in Las Vegas against a Mexican? [Chavez Jr referring now to Martinez’s 7th round TKO loss 12 years ago to Antonio Margarito in 2000)]. This will be your second fight in Las Vegas and against a Mexican.”

Martinez: “I have the rematch that I wanted. I will probably make you retire from boxing, because I am going to beat you up. I am going to hurt you, because it’s written or I’ll write it down.”

Chavez Jr: “I just want to wish him luck, a lot of luck. On September 15th, you’ll realize what type of fighter I am. I’m not just the son of Julio Cesar Chavez, you’ll see. I am the new Julio Cesar Chavez.”
