Khan still hasn’t dumped Roach; it’s possible he will keep him

Image: Khan still hasn't dumped Roach; it's possible he will keep himBy Chris Williams: It was thought that trainer Freddie Roach would be given the swift boot by former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan after his latest loss, a 4th round TKO defeat to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last month. Khan had said that he needed a trainer that would be there for him on a full time basis rather than the current situation where Khan is sharing Roach with numerous other fighters.

It’s starting to look like Khan won’t be giving Roach the axe, at least this time. Khan isn’t saying anything about replacing Roach, and it’s possible that the two have worked out a plan for Khan to get the training time that he requires.

However, even if Khan keeps Roach it may not last if Khan keeps getting beaten. Roach could get the hook in a fight or two depending on how long it takes for Khan to fight another good opponent that can punch. If Khan takes it easy and fights strictly in a defensive manner, taking no chances and fighting less than dangerous opposition, Roach will likely keep his job for a lot longer. But with the problems that Khan has been having in the ring in his last two bouts, Roach could be sent packing quickly if Khan is put in with someone a little too good.

I’m from the school where if things aren’t working out it’s better to cut your losses sooner rather than later. Khan should just boot Roach now and get a fresh start with a trainer that can teach him some defensive skills and some finesse on offense.

Here are the guys that Khan should be looking at to replace Roach:

Emanuel Steward
Roger Mayweather
Floyd Mayweather Sr
Virgil Hunter
Nacho Beristain
Pernell Whitaker
Teddy Atlas
Abel Sanchez
