Image: Khan may boot Roach within the week; Steward could be the replacementBy William Mackay: It’s looking like Amir Khan may give trainer Freddie Roach the royal boot within the week and go with another trainer to try and turn what’s left of his career around. It’s high time, isn’t it? Khan needs to pull the trigger on Roach and look for a trainer that specializes in working with fighters with weak chins like American Emanuel Steward.

Steward recently approached Khan about the job, according to ESPN.co.uk. Khan told them “Steward is the main one who’s approached me…I’m still with Freddie at the moment, but in a week’s time things might change. It’s all about seeing who suits my style.”

Normally I would say it’s a lost cause but after seeing how Steward worked magic with the careers of Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko after they too suffered bad knockouts, I think it might work. It will only work if Khan was smart enough to follow everything that Steward tells him to do between rounds.

We can’t see Khan go out there ignoring Steward’s advice and trying to slug it out with his opponents because then Khan will just get knocked out again. He doesn’t have the chin to fight in his old style, and needs to fight exclusively on the outside. Steward will help Khan learn to tie up his opponents when they get in close and use the ring to box his way to decisions instead of looking for knockouts that put him in danger.

Khan really isn’t a big man in the light welterweight division, but Steward can teach him how to fight tall and use his reach if Khan is open to learning. Steward will need to be strict with Khan because he can’t have Khan doing what he pleases when he fights and choosing to follow his own game plan. I’ve had the feeling that Khan fights whatever way he wants to and doesn’t always do what his trainer is telling him to do. At this point Khan can’t afford to do that anymore if he doesn’t want to be reduced to journeyman status.
