John Joe Nevin Pro?

By David Coleman: With the dust recently settling on an excellent London 2012 for the Irish boxing squad, many people will begin to wonder if any of our Olympians can make it in the pro game.

With Katie Taylor admitting she may be tempted into a lucrative professional contract, Ireland’s 56kg hero, John Joe Nevin, was next to hint he may be ditching the vest and head guard.

Speaking to the Irish media after his recent home-coming parade, the Mullingar slickster said: “I have had offers. We’ll sit down with the boys in a few weeks and talk about it.”

Although he will be entering his physical peak for Rio 2016, the temptation of big money contracts and huge fight nights may prove too hard to walk away from for the charismatic 23 year old.

As well as this Nevin’s slick, evasive style is extremely easy on the eye and his confidence and personality outside the ring make him a very marketable man indeed.

One thing is for sure, the potential bouts that await Nevin in the pro game are sure to capture the imagination of Irish and British boxing fans alike.

Potential domestic Super Bantamweight tussles with the likes of Big Bang Willie Casey and Paulie Hyland will sell out Irish venues, and further down the line, Nevin could clash with the likes of Martinez, Munroe, Quigg or Frampton.

With the fights above taken into consideration, along the way John Joe fights, it’s very easy to see why he has had offers from several promoters. One thing is for sure, if the Mullingar native decides to turn pro, I would certainly pay money to see him, and I’m sure many more would too.
